CATCHING, WEIGHING AND RELEASING BARBEL

A caught barbel should be unhooked as soon as possible to avoid stress and damage. To do this, use a decent pair of unhooking pliers. The right tools will make this process not only easier for you, but also safer for the fish. After unhooking comes the time to weigh the fish, something every angler likes to do. There are several options for this task, from digital scales to traditional weighing hooks.

UNHOOKING AND WEIGHING
For weighing barbel, we recommend using a weigh sling in combination with a reliable weighing clock, digital or analogue. Digital models offer the possibility of accurate measurements and sometimes even data storage. It is crucial that weighing is done calmly and in a controlled manner, respecting the fish. Consider using a tripod or weight handle for extra stability during weighing.

PROTECTION ON THE UNHOOKING MAT
Besides a soft unhooking mat, which protects against injury, it is advisable to choose a model with raised edges and a damp cloth or cover to cover the fish. This keeps the fish calm and prevents unnecessary movements. Get everything ready before you start fishing so that when you catch, you have everything immediately to hand.

SAFE RELEASE
After weighing, it is time to release the barbel safely. You do this by letting the fish recover quietly in the water, in the landing net or by hand, depending on the circumstances. Make sure the fish is given enough time to regain its strength. Using a landing net with a soft material is recommended to avoid damage, such as to the dorsal fin.
